In India, the minimum wage framework is governed by the Minimum Wages Act of 1948, which ensures fair compensation for workers across diverse sectors and regions. As of June 2024, the national minimum wage is approximately INR 178 per day, or INR 5,340 per month. However, the actual minimum wage varies significantly depending on several factors. Individual state governments determine their own minimum wage rates, and wage levels also depend on the area’s development within the state. Additionally, rates differ across various industries, and the type of job and skill level of the worker further influence the applicable wage.
The Central Government revises the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) twice annually, on April 1 and October 1, to reflect changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for industrial workers over the preceding six months. This mechanism ensures that wages remain responsive to inflation and cost-of-living changes.
